Beyond Our Ken Screenings

I'm the Director/Producer of Beyond Our Ken which is nominated for an AFI for Best Documentary this year.

In 2004 I came to OPEN CHANNEL for help in making a short documentary to get into the VCA graduation diploma in documentary making. I didn't have the first idea where to begin. OPEN CHANNEL showed me the ropes, held my hand and gave me confidence.

In the end I made a pretty good doco about a clairvoyant that got me into the VCA. After completing my course I started making a feature length doco about a 'cult' called Kenja. I did it with no funding whatsoever. I made it with the mates I met at the VCA, we just pooled our resources and got it done. I joined the group for 6 months to research them - It took two years to make.

It's now out on DVD at stores across Australia.

This is all pretty cool, but it started when I walked through the OPEN CHANNEL doors a little sheepishly 4 years ago. I'm extremely grateful to OPEN CHANNEL for helping me take the first steps - Melbourne is extremely lucky to have this open resource available to them. Many Melburnians take their first steps here, what's so exciting is that anyone can.

It's pretty sad that so many people fall victim to these terrible cults. I had a friend whose life is unfortunately taken over by one. It's not even her fault as she was born into it!! Her parents were already members so she didn't really stand a chance.
Just like you said on the radio, they are really intelligent, educated, middle class people. I just don't understand!
There is even a leader who she worships. It's disturbing but she has his picture on her bedroom wall. I'm pretty sure she's brainwashed.
They go to these weird events where everyone is dressed up in certain colours and they shout and scream for up to 2 hours. Weird...
Not sure but there may be devil-worshiping involved. They seem to talk about evil spirits a lot..or is it demons?
I think you should do a film on this cult and do a favour to Australian society.
It's called the Melbourne Football Club.
Let me know how it goes.
